Superhero Insider: Villains steal the show on The Flash and Supergirl

Each week, we break down the biggest moments from Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Arrow — both here and on SiriusXM’s EW Live every Friday during Superhero Insider.

This week, Manchester Black’s Elite caused from trouble for the Super Friends on Supergirl, King Shark and Gorilla Grodd duked it out The Flash, and Oliver and Emiko teamed up on Arrow. Meanwhile, on Black Lightning, the Tattooed Man returned. Here are the highlights:

After a few weeks off the board, David Ajala made his highly anticipated return as Manchester Black in this week’s Supergirl, and he wasn’t alone. While he was trapped behind bars, Manchester formed the Elite, which consists of the Hat (Louis Ozawa Changchien), Menagerie, and one of the Morai that was still at large. Together, this merry band of antiheroes made it their job to take out the Children of Liberty and any other xenophobes they found — and by take out, I mean murder. Sure, their methods are questionable and go against everything Supergirl stands for, but man, they were so much fun to watch. Hopefully, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of them this season. —Chancellor Agard

Arrow

Felicity and Laurel’s newfound friendship continues to be one of the best things about Arrow season 7. In Monday’s episode “Brothers & Sisters,” Laurel became the first person to find out about Felicity’s pregnancy, which was a pretty big sign of how much their relationship has grown since the season began. By this point in Arrow‘s run, we’re used to seeing Felicity have meaningful scenes with Oliver, Diggle, and the dearly departed Curtis, so the moments of bonding she has with Laurel feel new and quite refreshing because their rapport is unlike what Felicity has with the guys. Hopefully, Laurel doesn’t go anywhere and we get to see this friendship through to the end of the series. —C.A.

Black Lightning

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Tattooed Man, but Lala made his triumphant return to Black Lightning this week. At first it was hard to figure out why he was back at Garfield High holding Jefferson Pierce at gunpoint (wasn’t that new principal supposed to install rigid new security protocols…?), but the eventual payoff to the mystery was worth the disruptive storytelling. Most interesting of all was the look at Lala’s resurrection process, in which a mad-scientist-looking fellow pours his entrails into a cauldron of bright blue liquid until Lala emerges fully regenerated. By the end of the episode, Lala has determined that the only solution to his guilty conscience is to kill Tobias. Right now Freeland’s premier crime lord seems to be on top of the world, but pride goeth before a fall, and he’s got quite a few people gunning for him now. —Christian Holub

The Flash

The Flash boss Todd Helbing teased “King Shark vs. Gorilla Grodd” was coming this season, and the actual episode definitely didn’t disappoint. Watching the two meta-animals fight it out in a construction site was hands down one of the show’s most impressive and excellent visual effects sequences to date. While other shows like Legends of Tomorrow and Doom Patrol have definitely carved out a space for themselves as some of TV’s weirdest superhero offerings, this entire episode was a reminder that The Flash can still bring it when it comes to just pure comic book goodness. Honestly, I can’t wait for the sequel to this fight. —C.A.
