Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer teaming up for Netflix superhero film Thunder Force

Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer are in talks to bring their respective powers together for an original Netflix superhero comedy titled Thunder Force, EW has learned.

The film will be written and directed by McCarthy’s husband and frequent collaborator, Ben Falcone (Tammy, The Boss), and will not be R-rated, rather aiming to appeal to a broad audience. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood, which also said Marc Platt is producing the project alongside McCarthy and Falcone, and that the story would focus on the two characters getting superpowers. No further cast or plot details were available.

This would mark the first time that the Oscar-winning Spencer, 46, and the Oscar-nominated McCarthy, 48, pair up on screen. McCarthy will also be seen in Andrea Berloff’s gangster wives drama The Kitchen and Falcone’s sci-fi comedy Superintelligence this year, while Spencer will be scaring up audiences in Ma and leading the Apple TV+ drama series Truth Be Told.
