EW’s Best of Shows podcast: Lamenting the This Is Us-ification of TV

The third season finale of This Is Us is almost here (it airs Tuesday, March 26 at 9 p.m. on NBC), and this week the network will debut another hyper-earnest drama, The Village, to fill the void. In the latest episode of EW’s Best of Shows podcast, my fellow TV critic Darren Franich and I will offer our (not-so-favorable) review of The Village, a show that is all the more irritating for the many ways it attempts to replicate This Is Us‘s heart-tugging formula.

Of course, The Village is not the first example of the This Is Us-ification of TV: That honor goes to ABC’s A Million Little Things, which the network literally bills as an “emotional mystery” (barf). As you’ll hear me rage about in the podcast, both Million and The Village break one of my cardinal rules by having the audacity to work 9/11 into their stories as a plot point. (No spoilers, I promise.)

After Darren and I finish working through our very complicated feelings about The Village and the third season of This Is Us in general, we move on to a once-beloved comedy that’s taken a sharp downturn in quality: Arrested Development.
