Everything to know about Disney+, the studio’s upcoming streaming service

The House of Mouse may soon be headed to your home.

This year will see the much-anticipated launch of Disney’s new streaming service, appropriately titled Disney+. The service is still a ways away — there’s no official release date yet beyond “late 2019” — but with the Fox-Disney merger officially completed, Disney is one step closer to bringing its massive library to your living room.

Disney has promised to reveal more about the service during an investor presentation on April 11, which is when we’ll presumably get more info on price and a launch date. But we do have a pretty good idea of what content will be available when Disney+ does launch: Ever since the studio first announced that it would be creating its own branded streaming service back in 2017, details have slowly trickled out about some of the many, many movies and TV shows coming to Disney+.

When Disney+ launches, it will contain a combination of brand-new, exclusive content and old favorites from the Disney vaults. The studio is severing its ties with streaming services like Netflix, and going forward, many Disney movies and TV shows will only be available to stream on Disney+. (Disney chief Bob Iger has said that the recently released Captain Marvel will be the first theatrical film to be exclusively available to stream on Disney+.)

As far as Disney+ originals go, the studio has already greenlit films and TV shows based on some of its most beloved properties, including Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. One of its most high-profile launches is The Mandalorian, the first Star Wars live-action TV show, which is being overseen by The Jungle Book’s Jon Favreau and will star Pedro Pascal as an outlaw gunslinger. Another live-action Star Wars TV show is in the works centering on Diego Luna’s Rogue One character, Cassian Andor, and the beloved animated series The Clone Wars is also getting resurrected for 12 new episodes.

A number of Marvel heroes (and villains) will be making their way from the big screen to the small screen as well: A series about Tom Hiddleston’s mischievous Loki is in the works, and Disney+ is also exploring one potential series about Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and another based around Anthony Mackie’s Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier. (This comes after Netflix pulled the plug on all its Marvel originals, including Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage.)

Also on the way are an animated series set in the world of Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and a live-action show inspired by High School Musical. On the film side, Disney+ is also working on a live-action remake of The Lady and the Tramp, with Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux voicing the star-crossed canines, and a new version of The Sword in the Stone.

As for those new Fox acquisitions? It remains to be seen exactly how Fox’s library and licenses will fit into Disney+. Disney’s acquisition of Fox does give it the rights to National Geographic programming, which will be included on Disney+. Other Fox content, like The Simpsons, is expected to continue streaming on Hulu. (By buying Fox, Disney now has a majority stake in Hulu.) Also worth noting: Disney+ won’t contain any R-rated films, so presumably those will go to Hulu, too.
