Dark Phoenix gets an explosive, color-filled WonderCon poster

Dark Phoenix writer-director Simon Kinberg has teased that his new X-Men film was “very much inspired” by Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. And as if to prove it, 20th Century Fox unveiled a new poster for the film for WonderCon that certainly brings Waititi’s colorfully cosmic superhero romp to mind.

In the film, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) absorbs a cosmic force during a mission in space, causing her to lose control of her powerful telepathic and telekinetic abilities and unleash them upon those she cares about. The fiery energy associated with these powers — seen in the film’s trailers and the climax of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse — gives us the design of this trippy new poster.

“Sophie is the center of the film, that’s why she’s the one person that’s in the teaser poster. The entire movie revolves around her,” Kinberg said. “It’s a movie that goes into space and is cosmic, very much inspired actually by what [Waititi] did with Thor — even though the tone is totally different — but just the ability to make a character movie that still feels grounded, and fun, but is in whole other universes.”

Dark Phoenix hits theaters June 7.
