Captain Marvel‘s McKenna Grace to play lead in new Ghostbusters movie

Young Captain Marvel is now putting on a proton pack.

McKenna Grace, the 12-year-old actress who played a relentless kid version of Carol Danvers in the Marvel Studios hit has signed on to director Jason Reitman’s new Ghostbusters film, sources tell EW.

Grace will play the daughter of Carrie Coon’s single mother, and the younger sister to Finn Wolfhard in the film, which starts shooting this summer for release on July 10, 2020.

They make up the family that has a connection back to the original 1984 story. All we know about the plot, from a script by Reitman and Monster House filmmaker Gil Kenan, is that there’s an old farmhouse, someone tinkering on a broken proton pack, and the Ecto-1 vehicle, gathering dust beneath a canvas cover.

The mom and her family will be the leads of the movie, with assorted supporting characters yet to be revealed. Hopes are high among fans that members of the original cast will turn up in some way, but that hasn’t been specified by the filmmakers.

Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson have tweeted enthusiastically about the new film, however.

So, unlike the proton streams, keep your fingers crossed.

Grace, who turns 13 in June, has been acting since she was a 6-year-old, and her first major role was in the Disney XD puppet comedy series Crash & Bernstein, going on to appear regularly on Fuller House, Designated Survivor, and The Young and the Restless.

She co-starred opposite Chris Evans in 2017’s Gifted, and she has a habit of turning up as the kid versions of grown-up characters, such as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, little Sabrina in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Theo Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, and most recently Carol Danvers in the childhood flashback scenes of Captain Marvel.
