Browns to acquire Odell Beckham Jr. from Giants in trade

For the second time in a week, one of the NFL’s premier wide receivers is on the move.

The Cleveland Browns will acquire Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants in a trade, a person with knowledge of the deal confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal cannot become official until the start of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo was the first to report the agreement.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Giants would receive the No. 17 overall pick from the Browns in this year’s draft as well as the team’s second third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers.

The move brings an end to Beckham’s tumultuous run in New York just months after he signed a five-year, $90 million extension last August. Despite the deal, Beckham publicly criticized quarterback Eli Manning and the Giants’ offensive scheme, expressing his frustration with facing double coverage and a lack of downfield targets.

Amid speculation at the NFL scouting combine, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman shot down the idea that the team would move Beckham.

“We didn’t sign Odell to trade him,” Gettleman said.

In five years with the Giants, Beckham recorded 390 catches for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdown catches. His 77 catches for 1,052 yards and six scores in 2018 were all career lows for a season not shortened by injury, as he missed all but four games the previous year.

The Giants will absorb a $16 million hit in dead salary cap as a result of the move.

In Cleveland, Beckham will rejoin former LSU teammate and close friend Jarvis Landry to form of one the league’s most potent wide receiver tandems for second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The swap is the second between the two teams this offseason, as Cleveland earlier sent offensive guard Kevin Zeitler to New York in exchange for defensive end Oliver Vernon.

Beckham’s trade comes just days after the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to deal Antonio Brown to the Oakland Raiders.
