A Quiet Place sequel taps Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy

Casting for the sequel to A Quiet Place isn’t so hush hush anymore. Cillian Murphy, a favorite of director Christopher Nolan and star of BBC’s Peaky Blinders, is in talks to join the film with Emily Blunt, EW has learned.

Murphy is said to play a man who joins the Abbott family unit, though his intentions are mysterious. Further plot details are still kept, well, quiet.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the news.

Blunt returns as Evelyn Abbott, mother to her deaf daughter Regan and son Marcus, to be played again in the sequel by Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, respectively. Krasinski played father Lee Abbot and co-wrote and directed A Quiet Place, which saw a world overrun by vicious, blind monsters that hunt their prey through their enhanced hearing. The family were forced to live in silence in response, adapting sign language to communicate and walking barefoot on sand to damper the sounds of their steps.

Krasinski will return to helm and write the sequel, which will be produced by Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, and Michael Bay.

Murphy appeared in a number of Nolan films, including Dunkirk, Inception, and The Dark Knight Trilogy.

It’s unclear how much time will have passed between the first and second films, but Evelyn was last seen in the aftermath of giving birth in silence for fear of attracting the beasts. Raising a newborn in a silent world doesn’t seem any easier.

Simmonds had a number of ideas for where the sequel could go, one of which, she said to EW, would be “what is the world like after, once the kids are older? Or what happens to the aliens or how do we improve or solve that problem?”

“This is a world you can play in, this isn’t just a character to remake… it’s actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience,” Krasinski said. “It’s not like Alien or Jaws where the main villain is the thing you’re repeating; it’s an actual entire set of rules and the circumstance that the world has undergone that you can play in very different facets.”

The sequel is scheduled for theaters on May 15, 2020.
