Statue of Kevin Hart holding rainbow flag appears on Hollywood Boulevard ahead of the Oscars

Kevin Hart may have stepped down as the host of the Oscars, but it looks like his presence will still be felt at the ceremony.

A gold statue modeled after the actor holding a rainbow flag has mysteriously appeared outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where the Academy Awards are set to take place on Sunday. The base of the life-sized work reads “Hollow Apology.”

Controversy erupted after Hart was chosen as the emcee of the big night late last year, with many pointing out homophobic tweets the comedian posted back in 2009. The star initially defended himself but ultimately announced he would no longer be taking on the coveted duty, apologizing in the wake of the decision for his remarks.

In an Instagram post, enigmatic street artist Plastic Jesus revealed himself to be behind the statue and shared his support for the LGBT community.

“The current divisive rhetoric seems to have taken us back to the 1970s,” he captioned the image. “So much of the entertainment industry output comes from LGBTQ individuals . . . we should be celebrating it and not creating a hateful environment.”

Plastic Jesus, who often tackles social issues with his pieces, has previously made headlines by placing prison bars over Donald Trump’s Walk of Fame star and creating a statue of Harvey Weinstein in a bathrobe sitting on a “casting couch” on Hollywood Boulevard.
