RuPaul’s Drag Race star Shangela death drops into the Spirit Awards with fierce musical number

A star was born at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Shangela, superstar of RuPaul’s Drag Race and of the Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper film, surprised the ceremony on Saturday with a musical routine about some of the works being honored that afternoon. “Here are the nominees for best original songs that aren’t actually even in these films,” she prefaced.

RuPaul may want to have some words with her protégé about forgetting those words for a beat, but Shangela still managed to bring the house down, starting with a gag about Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk.

If Beale Street Could Talk, what would she say? ‘Step aside, b—, I’ve the right away,’” Shangela sang.

For Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade, the queen gave us a “chicken nugget dinner” bop: “If you want more sauce, baby, you can have mine.”

Shangela also spoofed Leave No Trace and You Were Never Really Here, but her next big club hit came in the big finale. Chances are even Ethan Hawke couldn’t hear the name of his Spirit Award-nominated movie without going, “I will be your First Reformed. Bless me, father.”

Watch the performance that had everyone gagging above.
