Glenn Close’s dog Pip steals the show during best actress Spirit Awards win

Glenn Close continued her awards season streak when she won Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, but her dog, Pip, stole the limelight multiple times.

On top of working the red carpet, the Havanese pup actually followed his human up on stage when Close went to accept the statuette.

“He’s my date,” the actress, 71, told the audience. As she began to say, “I am so honored to be here with all the women in this category. So so honored,” Close — and the camera — became distracted by Sir Pippin of Beanfield (as he’s known on Instagram) when he started rolling around on his back.

“What’s better than that?” Close asked the audience. “I brought him up for this very reason. It’s called ‘in the moment.’”

After coming back from a commercial break on IFC, host Aubrey Plaza joked, “Pippy the dog just scored a three-picture deal at Amazon.”

On a more serious note, Close, who also won Best Actress – Drama at the Golden Globes earlier this year, praised her team, including director Björn Runge. The actress noted how long it took for the filmmakers to get this project off the ground, though recognizing it’s common for independent films to go through such a grueling process.

“No matter what you’re wearing, no matter what red carpet you walk on, no matter what people say to you, it’s all been extremely gratifying and humbling, the fact that we get together and we tell these stories that really make a difference in the world,” Close said.

And now back to the dog.
