Jimmie Fails and Danny Glover shine in Last Black Man in San Francisco trailer

The eye-popping new trailer for The Last Black Man in San Francisco is poised to put Joe Talbot’s feature directing debut on your must-see summer movie list.

Based on an original story by Talbot and lead actor Jimmie Fails, the film revolves around a young man attempting to repossess a Victorian-style home built by his grandfather (Danny Glover) in the heart of San Francisco. As he embarks on a quest to reclaim his place in the city from millionaire gentrifiers, Jimmie grapples with growing anxieties about the face of his hometown changing rapidly enough to cast him as an outsider versus a lifelong resident.

Along the way, however, Jimmie’s journey leads him to unexpected places: He parties with strangers, speeds along busy streets on his skateboard, and rows a boat across the harbor — all while soaking up the soul of the region that’s potentially disappearing as he mulls leaving the Bay Area altogether.

“If you leave, it’s not your loss,” says Jimmie’s Aunt Wanda (Tichina Arnold) in the preview. “It’s San Francisco’s.”

Following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, the film received near-universal praise from movie critics. EW’s Leah Greenblatt called it an “episodic study of race, gentrification, and male friendship” that unfolds in loose, impressionistic waves while remaining “one of the richest stories at Sundance: gorgeously shot, keenly felt, and utterly original in both style and execution.”

In addition to Fails, Glover, and Arnold, the movie stars Mike Epps, Jonathan Majors, Rob Morgan, Finn Wittrock, and Thora Birch. It was produced by Plan B Entertainment’s Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner — the Oscar-winning trio behind films like 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight.

A24 will release The Last Black Man in San Francisco on June 14. Watch the trailer above.
